This is a revised edition of the catalogue originally published for Takahiko Kosugi: Sounding the New World, Summer 1996, an exhibition held at the Ashiya City Museum of Art & History in 1996.
The volume includes an English translation of an extensive interview with Takahiko Kosugi, which can be read as a form of oral history, along with newly added documentation of the events and concerts presented during the exhibition. These activities are introduced through photographs, programs, and archival materials.
From Group Ongaku, which he co-founded while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, to his involvement with the Taj Mahal Travellers and Fluxus, and later his role as Music Director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, as well as his own exhibitions and installation works, Kosugi consistently remained at the forefront of contemporary music and experimental art. This publication serves as an excellent introduction to one of the most influential figures in postwar Japanese avant-garde music.
