Japanese Folk Art & Design – Complete 4-Volume Set
A richly illustrated four-volume survey of Japanese folk tools, household objects, and vernacular material culture, organized by different environments and ways of life: Town, Rural Village, Mountain & Fishing Villages, and Neighboring Peoples.
The books document a wide range of everyday objects, including agricultural and fishing tools, baskets, containers, clothing accessories, eyeglasses, bags, metal fittings, and other utilitarian objects. Photographed largely in black and white, the objects are presented with a strong emphasis on their form, structure, material, and function.
Although published as an ethnographic and folkloric study, the series is also fascinating from the perspective of anonymous design, vernacular design, craft, product design, and material culture. Many of the objects have strikingly simple and functional forms that can appear surprisingly modern today, at times resembling abstract sculpture or contemporary industrial design.
The set is also notable for its graphic presentation and distinctive slipcase, with each of the four volumes identified by a different color.
