東西ドイツ分断後厳しく情報統制されていた東ドイツに向けて、ビラや雑誌などが取り付けられた気球が西ドイツから飛ばされ、東ドイツ国内の様々な場所に投下されていました。 実際にやっていたのは民間団体が多かったようですが、風船に本を結びつけて飛ばしていたという事実が、インターネットや衛星放送のない時代、メディアのあり方として驚異的でもあります。 本書は写真家のイェンス・クラインがその時の記録を編集したもので、東ドイツ国家保安省 シュタージ（Stasi）アーカイブの写真と、輸送風船の着地のテキスト記録を収録した作品集です。 気球と共に写っているのは当時の東ドイツの町の姿。イデオロギー対立の時代、当時の東ドイツ政府からすれば西側による政治工作の記録ですが、現代の眼から見ると、コンセプチュアルアートのようにも見える写真集です。 写真家のイェンス・クラインは1970年、アポルダ（旧東ドイツ）生まれ。現在はライプツィヒを拠点に活動しています。 これまでに、フォルクヴァング美術館（エッセン）、ヴィラ・シュトゥック（ミュンヘン）、ドレスデン国立美術館など、展覧会多数。 After the division of East and West Germany, information was tightly controlled in East Germany. In response, leaflets, magazines, and other printed materials were attached to balloons and sent from West Germany into the GDR (German Democratic Republic), where they were released by timer-controlled dropping mechanisms when wind conditions were favorable. This publication, edited by photographer Jens Klein, brings together photographs from the archives of the East German State Security Service (Stasi) alongside textual records documenting the landings of these transport balloons. The images show East German towns and landscapes with the balloons in situ. During the Cold War, these photographs served as records of what the East German government regarded as Western political propaganda operations.
