Vija Celmins was born in 1938 in Latvia. During World War II, she and her family fled as refugees, immigrating to the United States in 1948. She studied at UCLA in the 1960s, where she began developing her artistic practice. Her early works were based on shocking press photographs—such as nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll or crashing military planes—rendered in a figurative yet restrained manner. From the 1970s onward, she turned to depicting silent natural phenomena—seas, skies, spider webs, and sand—with painstaking precision. This book presents all 90 works shown at the Fondation Beyeler in Switzerland. It includes commentary by the artist herself, as well as contributions by renowned writers and artists.
