[condition] New 新刊 [Artist] 深瀬昌久 Masahisa Fukase [Publisher] MACK [size] 231x311x15mm [Published] 2019年 Photographer Masahisa Fukase’s Kazoku (Family) is a series of unconventional family portraits that he began in 1971 after returning to his family’s photo studio in Hokkaido, continuing the project for nearly two decades. In this eccentric series, Fukase placed his half-naked wife among his large extended family, later including other female models — and at times even himself and his father — nude. As a self-proclaimed “third-generation failure” of a family-run photo studio, Fukase parodied the conventions of traditional family portraits. Despite periods of interruption, the project continued until the Fukase Photo Studio closed in 1989. Spanning almost twenty years, the resulting body of work inadvertently chronicles the rise and fall of his family. What began as a playful experiment gradually took on a more serious tone, conveying a sharp discomfort with the idealized image of the “happy family” and revealing the humor, conflict, and sorrow that emerge within long-term familial relationships. Originally published in 1991 by Inter Press Corporation, this new edition of Kazoku (Family) was reissued by MACK in 2019.
