The resulting photographs stand as a quiet record of the end of postwar American prosperity. Although the project was originally produced for Fortune, it remained unpublished for decades. More than forty years later, in 2021, it was finally released by the British publisher MACK. Today, it is widely regarded as one of Shore’s most significant works. The people affected by factory closures appear calm and restrained. There are no dramatic scenes, no emotional manipulation, and no overt statements. Instead, Shore’s photographs quietly observe a society in transition, inviting viewers to consider what has happened and how people continue to live in its aftermath.
